ATHENS, Ga. (WTVM) - The University of Georgia announced on Friday that sophomore running back Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team following his arrest on felony weapons charges.
In a written statement released on Friday afternoon, head football coach Mark Richt made it clear the team was moving on.
"We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season," said Richt. "Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort."
Crowell, a former star at Carver High School in Columbus,?was stopped at a police checkpoint near the UGA campus early Friday morning. According to the arrest report, an Athens-Clarke County police officer said the car smelled of marijuana.
Police say Crowell consented to a search of the vehicle, where no drugs were found but a handgun with altered ID numbers was discovered under the driver's seat, and Crowell was placed under arrest. The other four passengers in the car, incoming freshman football players Josh Harvey-Clemons, Sheldon Dawson, and Blake Tibbs, and sophomore defensive back Quintavious Harrow were all questioned and released at the scene.
Crowell was charged with possessing a weapon in a school zone and?of having a gun with an altered identification mark, both felonies, as well as a misdemeanor count of possession of a concealed weapon. He was released on bond early Friday afternoon.
Crowell led Georgia with 850 yards rushing and five touchdowns, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. He racked up those numbers despite being suspended twice, for one quarter versus Vanderbilt for breaking team rules, and for the New Mexico State game for reportedly failing a drug test. He was also hobbled the last half of the season with an ankle injury.
Georgia signed two of the nation's top running back in the latest recruiting class, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, both of North Carolina.
