How big an issue is diabetes in the U.K? | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body?s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. As a result the body is unable to produce insulin and this leads to increased blood sugar levels, which in turn can cause serious damage to all organ systems in the body. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or the body is unable to effectively use the insulin that is being produced (DiabetesUk.org.uk).

Type 2 diabetes can develop through a lack of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and once you are diagnosed, then looking after your health becomes an even more important part of your daily life. By getting back on track, you can reverse the situation. However, this condition now affects 3.7 million people across the U.K. and accounts for 10% of the National Health Service budget. These statistics are still increasing.

Understanding just how big an issue diabetes is of course necessary to inform health professionals and politicians and anyone else responsible for targeting resources. It also helps all of us to make healthy decisions for our families. At least part of the answer can be found in both quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis of data gathered by health professions who are at dealing with patients on a daily basis. Which age groups are showing the greatest increase? What are their eating habits? Is there a regional influence? Information such as this will have no doubt informed organisation such as DiabetesUK and led them to the decision to raise the profile of this condition that now affects 3.7 million people across the U.K. and accounts for about 10% of the NHS budget.

As we get older, a lot of people are likely to put on weight, but just by taking the time to engage in a relatively small amount of exercise (there are guidelines available on the NHS website) then you can ensure that you are not one of the increasing number of people that are diagnosed.

A friend of mine who is a doctor told me that diabetes is a huge issue in the U.K. It will obviously have financial and resource implications for health professionals and will continue to do so as the number of sufferers increase. This is something that we all need to think about and do what we can to help those that might be at risk of developing the condition.
